India has surpassed China in ranking the country’s largest arms importer in the world, according to research institute that monitors the global arms sales.

Reporting from the pages of Al Jazeera, Monday, March 14, 2011, report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute reported central India’s military modernization efforts. This is done to match the strength of China and gain international support.

According to the institute’s report, India’s defense budget for next year is 1.5 trillion rupees. About 70 percent of India’s arsenal is the result of imports.

As many as 82 percent of imports of weapons from Russia, which has long partnered with India in the field of defense. Most, India bought fighter jets and transport aircraft for the modernization of naval and air.

“Purchases by India, will not be done in other countries. Very large,” said Rahul Bedi, an analyst with defense magazine Jane’s Defence Weekly.
